I remember sitting in the softly lit living room with a family not long ago. The air felt thick with unspoken worries as the daughter’s voice trembled, her hands nervously twisting a worn handkerchief. She shared how her mother’s sudden illness had thrown them into chaos—the kind of chaos where sleep escapes you and silence fills the conversations that once seemed easy. The smell of fresh coffee mingled with the faint scent of lavender from a nearby candle, a quiet attempt to bring calm amid the storm of uncertainty.

Advance care planning conversations can feel like stepping into this very room—charged, tender, and heavy with emotion. But these moments are also precious opportunities to lighten the weight before crisis arrives.
